There are many cases in the courts right now where people have shared copyrighted music or movies over the systems and not only have gotten themselves in trouble but the file sharing system as well. Therefore, not only does the file sharing system need to be careful but the consumer needs to be careful as well.

It is very easy for the consumer to drag the file sharing system into litigation that they were not meaning to drag them into at the present time. All it takes is the sharing of copyrighted material and suddenly the user and the system is in trouble. The user just has to be unlucky on that day and get caught by government authorities while sharing or downloading copyrighted materials. These infractions may seem minor. However, the music industry has taken this very seriously and has attempted to sue people who use the file sharing systems this way, up to $70,000 per litigation.

In fact, for the owners of file sharing systems there has been a new precedent set where the owner of the company has been sent to jail because of this use of their systems. The backlash of this action made many of the sharing systems to release information regarding the situation asking their customers not to engage in this type of behavior. However, many of the file sharing systems took away the capabilities of the users to share files with other users. In most sharing systems. A user can only share a file with themselves. This cut down the activity of people who wanted use file sharing systems to share copyrighted material because the person who already owns a piece of copyrighted material is only sharing with himself or herself. As far as a movie or music file that they already own, this is not expressly illegal.
